Brook

The entire evening had been one huge and humiliating disaster and I just wanted to curl up in my bed and forget all about it.

Not only had I failed to identify the last senior member of the Hunters. Not only had I almost been raped, and by Rector’s account, violently. But above and beyond all that, I had the humiliation of throwing myself at Rector only to have him turn me down.

How dare he.

Shit.

Damn it. Why?

Sitting alone in my room, in the dark, I went over the events of the night repeatedly. How had it all gone so wrong?

You got outsmarted.

Right.

How was I going to face the guys the following morning? Should I just run away and forget about it all?

No, I told myself. You have to face this, as humiliating as it might be.

A soft knock at the door interrupted my self-loathing. Was it Rector again?

Wanting a cool glass of water, I’d opened the door, stunned to see him standing there. I wasn’t ready to talk to him about all this yet. I needed more time to think it all through.

And now?

“What?” I called out softly.

“It’s Bishop. Can I come in?”

I shrugged.

“Brooklyn? Is it okay if I come in?”

I sat up and looked at the door. “Yeah,” I said with a complete lack of enthusiasm. “Come in.”

He opened the door and stepped inside, gently closing the door behind him.

“Have you come to deliver the final humiliation?” I said.

Cocking his head to the side, he looked at me with a quizzical gaze. “No,” he said after a moment’s hesitation. “I thought I’d bring you a snack.”

“Why?”

“Well,” he said, suddenly unsure. “I thought it might make you feel better.”

“So, Rector told you all about my disastrous night,” I muttered as he set a bowl of soup on my nightstand.

“He told me that you almost got yourself into a very sticky situation.”

I grunted and gazed at the soup. “I’m not really the type who eats when I’m feeling down.”

“So, you are feeling down.”

You got me there. I looked up at him and he brightened up my room with the warmest, most comforting smile I’d ever seen.

“I wanted to talk to you about what happened and how we might move forward,” he said as he pulled a chair up to the side of the bed and sat down.

I appreciated his restraint. He could have easily come to sit on the edge of the bed. Did he sense how I didn’t want a man too close to me just yet?

“Are you guys going to throw me out of the House?”

“No,” he said reassuringly. “We wouldn’t do that. We recognize just how much you want to be a part of the House of Saints and we value that.”

“Then, what do you propose we do?”

“We think it’s best that you change teams and join mine.”

I frowned. It was like admitting that I’d failed so miserably and that there was no way I’d be able to redeem myself.

“Most of the work is done on the preparation for the football afterparty,” he said.
